C.O.R.E. Featured Playscape: Applebrook Country Dayschool-Infant Playscape
"Between every two pines is a doorway to a new world” John Muir
Creating a magical space for exploration and discovery, was our vision for the infant playscape we recently completed at Applebrook County Dayschool in Ringgold Georgia. This playscape is one of three natural playscape transformations are currently working on at this school, as well as façade and landscape additions to the overall outdoor environments.
When we first started the consultation process at the school, we found this outdoor space was having some major drainage issues. These issues made the entire area unusable for the children of the school and turned the space into a storage area for extra play equipment.
Our solution to this issue was a complete drainage overhaul and playscape expansion. We almost doubled the footprint of the original outdoor area and included several hill-play elements such as embankment slides, a balance beam, and concrete culvert tunnels.
The addition of a buggy storage area disguised as a hobbit house, a sensory mosaic wall, a splash creek and waterfall, a sculptural musical element, a wildflower meadow and several other exploration areas are hidden throughout the space. The entire playscape was covered with artificial turf and mosaic tile work for both comfort and discovery. The tiny hands and feet that are utilizing this environment, are often seen bare and enjoying the bright sun. The standard attire in the splash creek? A diaper and a smile.
This space has been transformed from a utilitarian environment into a place of wonder and joy. It is enjoyed by both staff, families, and children alike. The surrounding community has been supportive from day one. It’s rare that a day will go by, that a neighbor or passerby doesn’t peek their head over the fence and say “I want to come play too!” or “What on earth are you guys making!”. This project has become a community endeavor without a doubt. It may have started as our next “job”, but as we have moved into the third phase, it has definitely evolved into a family affair. Thank you Applebrook Country Dayschool & especially Ms. Teresa for your support and inspiration as we have progressed through this process. It has been a privilege working with
all of you.
